9. Smudge the liner (this is optional). To make the line look softer, run a Q-tip along the line you made. Go gently on this until you get the right look.

10. Now do the exact same thing to the other eye.

Makeup Application: 5 Steps to Applying Eyeliner Like a Pro

Eyeliner is a small yet remarkable little tool in the process of creating a dramatic eye.  In makeup, this is an element that is often overlooked because of lack of knowledge on which formula to choose (liquid, kohl, cream, or gel) and how to apply it.  So if you want to know more about eyeliner and how to make it wear for hours with proper application, then read on and you will soon know how!

Step 1: Start with a Clean Face

This may seem obvious, but it is absolutely necessary.  Start with a clean face and make sure to pay close attention to the eye area.  Since you have natural folds around the eye, it is easy for dirt and oils to get trapped there. 

Step 2: Prep the Eyes

*Tip:  At this point, you will want to step about a foot away from the mirror to evaluate your work.  If there are any gaps or uneven lines, repeat Step 3 to correct them. 

Step 4: Define the Lower Lids

With one hand, using your ring finger, lightly press the skin just below the center of your lower lashline.  With your other hand, place the pencil tip on top of the lashes at the outer corner, slant it so the side rests on the lashline, and draw inward (directly on the lashline).  Stop just short of the tear duct (the tiny hole you see in your lower eyelid).  Repeat for other eye. 

Step 5: Blend & Finish

This step may not be necessary if you have large eyes that tend to dominate your face.  However for others, the sharp lines of the pencil tend to make eyes look smaller, so soften the edges by gently blending them with a wedge makeup sponge.  To finish the look, use a taupe or neutral eye shadow across your eyelids for a daytime effect.  For a more dramatic evening look, use a shadow that is the same color as your eyeliner or use two eyeshadows that are a few shades lighter that your eyeliner.  Finish with your favorite mascara.

Tightlining Your Eyeliner to Enhance Your Eyelashes

I’ve always been haunted by thin eyelashes. Anything that I can do to thicken my eyelashes, or to make them appear thicker, I do it. One of these techniques is called tightlining.

Tightlining, as the name suggests, involves lining your eyes with eyeliner tighter than regular (from the top) applications of eyeliner. With tightlining, the eyeliner is pushed into the lashes, creating a far more natural look.

Over time, I’ve found that it becomes easier to use tightlining than regular eyeliner application techniques, so I end up using this technique on a daily basis. With practice, you can make it look completely natural while making your lashes appear fuller.

As an added benefit, tightlining gives you slightly more canvas space for your eye makeup, if you’re doing something like a smokey eye look. With the eyeliner at the bottom of your eyelid instead of above your lash line, you don’t have to worry about uneven coloring above and below your eyeliner line.

I don’t use eyeliner pencils for this, since it seems to mess my eyelashes up, poking them in all different directions. Gel liners work, but you can use eyeshadow in a pinch if you’re careful, just make sure not to drop powder in your eyes. I’ve been there a few times, and it’s not fun at all!

To start, grab your gel eyeliner (or eyeshadow, if you’re using that) and a small, narrow makeup brush. Hold your eyelid up with one hand while applying the eyeliner from the bottom, making sure to push it through the lashes. I was paranoid about poking myself in the eye at first, but eventually I got over it.

With the brush there, wiggle it slightly side to side to apply the eyeliner, then move to the next part of your eye. Dragging the brush won’t work here, since you’ll be brushing your eyelashes all over the place, making them look haphazard and unnatural.

Repeat this across the entire lash line, making sure to get even coverage. There isn’t a very good way to blend this, so take your time the first time you do it. I did it about ten times before I got something I liked, so don’t worry if it isn’t perfect at first.

The same applies to your lower lashes, except that you don’t have to hold your eyelid up. Bring the brush in from underneath the lower lash line, and apply directly to the base of the eyelashes. As the lower lash line, I put far less emphasis on the eyelash base than on the upper lids, but it’s important to do a bit of darkening here, again to keep everything looking natural.

If you’ve done it right, the bases of your eyelashes will appear darker. After adding mascara into the mix, I can actually see my eyelashes, which is amazing by itself. I can still apply slight winging to the eyeshadow (pulling the outside of the eyeliner into the crease on the outside of the eye) without it looking too noticeably unnatural.

How to Apply Liquid Eyeliner

You do not need to try and paint a continuous line with liquid eyeliner. It is actually easier to pain a few small dashes onto the lash line, eg. Inner corner, middle and outer corner, then go back and connect them.

Keep your eye partially open so that you can more easily follow the contour. To get your line as close to the lash line as possible, lift your eyelid from under the arch of your eyebrow instead of tugging the skin off to the side, as is common practice. When you’re just starting out, you needn’t worry about getting the line straight in one fell swoop. Draw three fine dashes, one on this inside, middle, and outside corner, and connect them.

Use your fingers (on the hand your not using to apply the liner) to pull your eyelid flat. The goal is to eliminate creases along the lash line, which can cause turbulence and frustration.

Tilt your head back a little and apply as close to the lash line as humanly possible, otherwise you get a weird blank space.

Always start from the inside and stroke outward in one fell swoop. Don’t try to do it in portions, just go for it–it’s silly, but it’s all about believing in yourself.

Taking your opposite hand, hold your eyeliner applicator between your thumb and forefinger. Starting at the inner corner of your eye, slowly draw a thin line across your eyelid. Make sure you get as close to your lash line as possible. To complete your look, extend past your lash line. This is great if you’re trying to achieve the cat eye look.

Instead of trying to apply it all in one long line, it works best if you actually draw several smaller lines. However, as you practice more, you will find the best method for you.
